Open Water
moviecritic writes, "OPEN WATER is an ok thriller but hardly deserving of the maniacal praise coming from the advance press. It's another Blair Witch hoodwink. Yes, it sure is scary to be left in the water and it's horrible to think this actually happened but as a movie: the acting is at times REALLY bad. I think more seasoned actors could have raised the terror level because I spent a lot of the time marveling at certain stiff line readings. Not helping matters is the fact that there's really not a lot of room for dialogue and conflict with two people floating in water for hours and hours. The "Are you blaming me for this???" conversation is unintentionally embarrassing. "
The ending was a surprise but did that make it worth seeing? Debatable. It takes forever and a day for the movie to actually get going and getting there didn't teach us anything about these people. It's just "business" - packing, lounging, chatting, etc. Often during their water nightmare, the music cues us to feel terror when the only thing about to happen is a fade out. That occurred a few times and it got annoying. Don't go expecting tons of gore - it's not that kind of film. Overall, it wasn't terrible but be warned, this is low budget and if you don't much pay attention to acting, you'll somewhat enjoy it between bouts of boredom and impatience.
